About Mothers Pride

Mothers Pride began baking plain bread in 1958. At that time it was the only bread Scots ate. Pan bread was introduced to Scotland in the 1970s. Mothers Pride employs 850 people in Scotland at its Glasgow and Ayr bakeries and almost 600,000 loaves of Mothers Pride bread are sold in Scotland every week.

In Scotland, Mothers Pride is the number one plant white bread brand. Its strength is driven by Mothers Pride Scottish Plain bread, which accounts for around half of the Plain bread market and is widely available in Scottish retail outlets.

The Scottish Plain loaf has undergone a renaissance in recent years, helped by television advertising and programme sponsorship supported by a strong PR programme. Why not take a look at them in the Advertising section!

Mothers Pride Scottish Pan, a premium white sliced loaf baked specifically for Scottish consumers, was launched in October 1998 to help Mothers Pride gain a presence in the growing premium white bread sector. Now you can pick up your Mothers Pride in plain and pan!

Advertising

Jeely Piece

The Mothers Pride "Jeely Piece" television advertisement, produced by Edinburgh based 1576, was screened in Scotland in 1995. The advertisement featured a young actress, Kirsty Graham, eating a 'jeely piece', Scotland's traditional jam sandwich made with plain bread familiar to generations of Scottish children. You may remember Kirsty as the star of the film, Loch Ness, where she starred alongside Ted Danson.

The well known Jeely Piece song accompanied the advertisement sung by St. Joseph's School Choir of Castlemilk.

Did you know that the song was actually written by Adam Tulloch McNaughton about the tenement blocks in Castlemilk.

The Jeely Piece song:-

"Oh ye cannae fling pieces oot a twenty storey flat, 700 hungry weans will testify tae that. If it's butter, cheese or jeely, if the breed be plain or pan, the odds against it reaching earth are 99 to wan."
